CoLab is a creative collaboration platform built to help African creatives turn ideas into work that actually gets made.
From scattered ideas and WhatsApp conversations to something a little more organised. Meet the platform helping creatives bring their projects to life.

Just So You Know
What Is CoLab?
CoLab is a project management platform for creatives so you can manage your projects.
There is a particular kind of chaos that comes with making something creative.
A filmmaker has a script, three people to contact, a production budget that needs updating and a deadline approaching far too quickly. A designer is juggling two clients, a collaborator who hasn't sent their files and an idea for a personal project that has been sitting in their notes for six months.
Somewhere between the idea and the finished work, the actual work of making things happen begins.
And that work is rarely as glamorous as the final product.
It is planning. Coordination. Finding people. Following up. Managing money. Remembering what everyone agreed to. Keeping a project alive when everyone has other things going on.
This is the problem CoLab is interested in.
So, what exactly is CoLab?
CoLab is a creative collaboration platform built to help creatives organise their work, manage projects and collaborate with other people.
It brings some of the practical systems behind creative production into one workspace, giving individuals and teams somewhere to plan, coordinate and keep track of the things that make a project happen.
The idea is fairly straightforward: creatives should spend less time figuring out how to organise their work and more time actually making it.
CoLab is designed for the people working behind the scenes and in front of the camera. Filmmakers, designers, photographers, musicians, illustrators, producers and creative teams working across disciplines.
Whether you're developing a short film, putting together a campaign, producing an album or working on a collaborative design project, the platform gives you tools to bring the moving parts together.
What can you actually do on CoLab?
CoLab isn't simply a place to write down ideas. It is built around the practical work of developing and managing creative projects.
01. Manage your creative projects
Every project has a collection of moving parts.
CoLab gives you a dedicated space to organise the work, keep important information together and manage the different activities required to get a project across the finish line.
Instead of having project information scattered across messages, documents and personal notes, you can create a central workspace for the work itself.
02. Organise tasks and deadlines
Projects become manageable when the work is broken down into smaller pieces.
CoLab's task management tools allow you to organise activities, track progress and keep an eye on deadlines. Tasks can be viewed through Kanban boards and calendar views, making it easier to understand what needs to happen and when.
It is a small but important distinction: having an idea of what needs to happen is one thing. Knowing what needs to happen next is another.
03. Collaborate with other creatives
Creative work is rarely a solo exercise.
CoLab supports team collaboration around projects, giving collaborators a shared place to work through responsibilities and activities.
The intention is to make working together less dependent on someone remembering to send another message, follow up on a conversation or explain what happened in a meeting three weeks ago.
The project becomes the shared reference point.
04. Work with templates
Not every project needs to begin from scratch.
CoLab includes templates that can help creatives establish a structure for their work, rather than repeatedly rebuilding the same processes.
For teams working on recurring productions, campaigns or creative activities, reusable systems can make the process considerably easier.
The goal isn't to turn every project into the same thing. It is to make the repetitive parts of organising work less repetitive.
05. Keep an eye on project finances
Creative work has a financial side that is often overlooked until something goes wrong.
CoLab includes financial tracking tools to help creatives keep project finances organised alongside the work itself.
Because budgets, expenses and money allocated to a project are not exactly optional details. They tend to become rather important eventually.
06. Keep ideas somewhere useful
Ideas have a habit of arriving at inconvenient times.
The Idea Vault gives creatives a place to collect and organise ideas that might become something later.
Not every idea needs to become a project immediately. Sometimes it needs somewhere to live until the right collaborator, opportunity or moment comes along.
07. Explore AI-assisted creative support
CoLab also includes Creative Sensei, an AI feature designed to provide creative support and assistance.
The broader intention is to explore how AI can help creatives think through their work, develop ideas and navigate parts of the creative process.
Not to replace the creative. That would rather defeat the point.
Who is CoLab for?
CoLab is being built with creative professionals and emerging creatives in mind.
That includes:
Filmmakers and production teams managing productions, collaborators, tasks and deadlines.
Designers and illustrators working across clients, briefs and creative projects.
Musicians and music teams coordinating creative work, production activities and collaborators.
Photographers managing shoots, creative projects and the people involved.
Creative producers and project managers bringing different disciplines together to make something happen.
Students and emerging creatives learning how to turn creative ideas into structured projects and professional work.
The common denominator isn't the discipline.
It is the experience of trying to make something happen with other people.
Why build another creative platform?
There are already plenty of tools for managing work.
You can use spreadsheets, project management software, calendars, messaging apps and a collection of other platforms to keep things moving. In fact, most creatives already do.
The challenge is that creative work has its own particular rhythms.
Projects are collaborative, sometimes unpredictable, often financially constrained and frequently assembled around people who have other jobs, clients or responsibilities.
A filmmaker might work with a designer, a musician, an editor and a producer. A photographer might bring together a stylist, makeup artist, assistant and client. These teams are often temporary, assembled for a specific project and then dispersed.
CoLab is interested in what happens when we build systems around the way creative people actually work.
And particularly what happens when those systems are designed with African creative industries in mind.
Where is CoLab right now?
CoLab is currently a web-based platform built using Base44, an AI-powered application development platform.
It has moved beyond the original concept into a working product, with project management, task management, collaboration, templates, financial tracking, an Idea Vault and Creative Sensei forming part of its product offering.
That does not mean the platform is finished.
CoLab is still being developed, tested and refined. There is work to do around the experience, functionality and the broader systems that could make it more useful to creatives.
The current platform is an important starting point: a practical workspace for creative projects, with a much larger ambition behind it.
The next chapter involves making it more useful, connecting more creatives and exploring how the platform can support collaboration beyond individual projects.
The platform is only the beginning
The longer-term vision for CoLab extends beyond project management.
We want to explore what happens when creatives have access not only to tools for managing their work, but also to opportunities, collaborators, knowledge, resources and communities that help them develop professionally.
That includes thinking about creative networks, institutional partnerships, learning, industry opportunities and ways to connect emerging talent with the wider creative economy.
Because a platform can help you organise a project.
But finding the right collaborator, discovering an opportunity or learning how an industry works can change what that project becomes.
These are different problems, and we are interested in both.
Building the infrastructure behind creativity
There is a recurring conversation about Africa's creative potential.
We talk about the talent, the stories, the music, the films, the design and the cultural influence. And rightly so.
But there is another conversation worth having.
What infrastructure supports the people making all of this?
What helps a creative move from an idea to a project, from a project to a body of work, and from a body of work to a sustainable career?
CoLab is one small attempt to answer those questions.
We are building tools for the work that happens between inspiration and execution. The planning, the coordination, the collaboration and the systems that allow creative people to keep making things.
Not because creativity needs to become more corporate.
But because good ideas deserve a better chance of becoming something real.
Bring the idea. Find your people. Make it happen.
That is CoLab.
From scattered ideas and WhatsApp conversations to something a little more organised. Meet the platform helping creatives bring their projects to life.
